MISSION

The objective of the Salomon Foundation is: “To (financially) support the many charities that contribute to a better world and in particular but not limited to the acceptance of and respect for Jewish culture and religion in the Netherlands.

One of the aims of the Foundation is to support (financially) the many charities that contribute to the promotion of culture and / or education, in particular but not limited to literature and literary translations.

Finally, the Foundation aims to (financially) support the many charities that contribute to animal welfare and the protection of endangered species in the Netherlands and abroad.

POLICY

The board has formulated the following policy plan for the next five years:

Work to be performed:

The board has decided to continue the policy pursued to date, whereby Jewish charities will be emphatically supported, with the aim of contributing to the improvement of peace in the world and acceptance and respect for the Jewish culture and religion, in particular in the Netherlands, Israel and the United States.

ACTIVITIES

To date, the Foundation has supported a variety of activities with a focus on Jewish cultural, charitable and scientific causes. In addition, activities in the field of art and culture and animal welfare have been given support. In recent years, the following projects and activities have been supported by the Foundation:

  • Contributions to the IYYUN Center for Jewish Spirituality;
  • Donations to Alyn Hospital, a children's hospital in Jerusalem;
  • Donations to Yad Rachel, a Jewish charity involved in postnatal depression projects (education, knowledge enhancement, prevention and treatment) and support for those in need in Israel in a more general sense;
  • Contribution to the costs of building a new Chabad house in Albert Cuypstraat in Amsterdam;
  • Donations to My Keren Hasluchim, INC, Chabad's fundraising organization;
  • Costs for translating the Pirkei Avoth;
  • Costs for childcare at home for the Cheider Foundation;
  • Payments for (shul) attributes for the Jewish synagogue in Amsterdam;
  • Contributions to the costs of supporting the work of the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam;
  • Various other (smaller) Jewish projects;
  • Contributions to the Friends of the Asan Elephant Foundation for setting up an elephant hospital in Sri Lanka;
  • Contribution to the Concertgebouw Orchestra Donors' Foundation.

TRANSLATION OF THE PIRKEI AVOTH (CONTINUATION):

As long as no proper Dutch translation of the Pirkei Avoth is available, the Foundation will continue to make every effort to provide the current translation(s) with resources, so that a good Dutch translation of this book is ultimately made available.

This book is the most discussed tract of the Jewish library because of its ethical content. It is precisely in these times of materialism that the board, together with the initiator of the Foundation, is of the opinion that ethical awareness and ethical action is a virtue that must not be lost, whereby the aim is to demonstrate through translation that ethical awareness and action is relevant to all times and that the Pirkei Avoth is a timeless book in that sense.

The board of the Foundation would welcome it if the translation was completed within the timeframe of the current policy plan, but is realistic enough to realize that a longer timeframe will be necessary, as the translation relies on volunteers who, in addition to Hebrew understanding and familiarity with the difficult to access teachings of the Pirkei Avoth.

Under no circumstances can there be a literal text translation, but there must be a “realization” translation.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO CHABAD-LUBAVITCH:

In recent years, the foundation has made various donations to organizations and projects associated with Chabad-Lubavitch, an important international Jewish religious organization with Chabad houses in many countries, including in Amsterdam and New York.

Chabad plays an important role in the broadening and strengthening of international Judaism through the establishment of local Chabad houses in many countries worldwide.

The Chabad houses organize activities in the field of Jewish religious education, charity, the collective celebration of Jewish religious festivals and the strengthening of the local Jewish communities.

The donations were intended, among other things, for the construction of a new Chabad house in Albert Cuypstraat by the Chabad Central Amsterdam Foundation, for the Chabad-Lubavicz of Midtown, New York and for My Keren Hasheluchim, the International Chabad Fundraising Organization.

The board intends to continue this policy.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO SUPPORT THE MOST VULNERABLE:

The Foundation has made several donations in recent years to the Alyn Hospital in Jerusalem, a leading and internationally renowned children's hospital, which, using a multidisciplinary approach, focuses on the rehabilitation of sick children in the best possible way, including not only medical and nursing help, but also social and psychological support.

The board is distinctly committed to Alyn Hospital and intends to continue supporting the hospital in the coming years.

In addition, donations were made to Yad Rachel, an NGO in Israel that works to educate underprivileged children and support these children and their families. The board is open to requests from other organizations and projects to support weak and vulnerable groups in society by organizations that qualify for this.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO ANIMAL WELFARE ORGANIZATIONS:

The board intends to support concrete projects in the field of animal welfare, as it has done in recent years to the Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation to set up an elephant hospital in Sri Linka.

In addition, the development of this hospital could actually be followed and the hospital in Sri Lanka was visited by the foundation's largest donor.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COSTS OF THE SYNAGOGUES:

The board of the Foundation will comply with the periodic requests from the board of the shul in Amsterdam for contributions with a special purpose. The possibility of practicing the Jewish faith in an appropriate environment is one of the foundations for the initiator of the Foundation, regardless of the manner and depth of the actual practice of the faith.

In addition to the religious aspect, the shul serves as a social center for the exchange of mutual Jewish ties, both with regard to members of the Amsterdam congregation and the Jewish community in general.

The board of the Foundation is of the opinion that it is morally obliged to contribute to the costs of maintaining the Jewish community, whereby the contributions are partly based on the realization that everyone should contribute according to their capacity and not according to the appeal of the “facilities” that are offered.

Each request will be judged on its merits and these donations will be decided on an ad hoc basis.

OTHER JEWISH AND NON-JEWISH TARGETS:

The board of the Foundation remains open to requests for support for goals that are in line with and with the objectives of the Foundation, as included in the statutes and detailed in the policy plan. Each request will be assessed on its own merits, in accordance with the policy plan.

BOARD

BBOARD MEMBERS:

Dr. J. Krant, Chairman
Dr. E. Evers, Board Member
Dr. S. Albek, Treasurer, Secretary

BOARD REMUNERATION:

As also stipulated in the articles of association, the board members cannot claim any remuneration for board work, either directly or indirectly. Reasonable and not excessive expenses incurred by the board members on behalf of the Foundation can be submitted to the board for reimbursement following the submission of a cost specification.

All resources received by the Foundation are used for the purpose of the Foundation. The operating costs are only paid by the Foundation as its own costs. The board does not rule out that costs will accrue in the future in connection with bringing the Foundation to the attention and recruiting new donors, such as in connection with fundraising campaigns, but only when the board has a concrete and realistic expectation that such an action will lead to results.

INFLUENCE OF THE POLICY OF INDIVIDUAL BOARD MEMBERS:

All board members have the same vote in board meetings. The relationship that each of the board members maintains with the initiator of the Foundation, which could possibly influence the use of resources, does not affect the board members' own accountability. This accountability will be respected by all board members at all times. If the board is of the opinion that such influence is present on the part of one or more board members, the board members concerned will abstain from voting. The same applies if one of the board members is involved in any way, through a board position or otherwise, and / or has a personal interest in organizations and / or persons supported by the Foundation and / or who request support from the Foundation.
